Time Travel Tour (1958 to 2018)

Contact Energy welcomes conference attendees to join a time travel tour of the Wairakei geothermal field.  The tour will commence at the Wairakei power station.  The Wairakei power station was commissioned in 1958, it was the second geothermal power station in world and the first to generate electricity from a liquid dominated system. We will then travel up through the Wairakei Steamfield and visit the Western borefield production area.  From the Western borefield we will travel to the Te Mihi steamfield and power station.  The 166 MWe Te Mihi power station was commissioned in 2014.  The journey from Wairakei to Te Mihi shows the progression of the geothermal industry through the ages.

This tour is limited to 50 participants and will be offered as first come first confirmed via formal registration (above or alongside conference registration).
