New to 2025 NZ Geothermal Workshop

Field Trip | Government Gardens-Ngāpuna thermal area

The Government Gardens – Ngāpuna, on the southern edge of Lake Rotorua, is a unique location where geothermal activity and a variety of geothermal direct uses coexist sustainably and in harmony. It is also a modern tourist destination set against a rich cultural and historical backdrop — the result of a shared vision between Ngāti Whakaue and European settlers to establish Rotorua as a national spa and wellness town in the late 1800s.

This tour will showcase a selection of direct-use sites and some of the most beautiful and well-preserved geothermal features and landscapes of New Zealand. It offers the participants a high-level understanding of the environmental management strategies — and challenges — involved in fulfilling the aspirations of the Rotorua community. These efforts aim to protect the area's significant cultural and environmental value while supporting low-impact, sustainable use of the geothermal resources for great socio-economic benefits.
