Field Trip | Government Gardens-Ngāpuna thermal areaThe Government Gardens – Ngāpuna, on the southern edge of Lake Rotorua, is a unique location where geothermal activity and a variety of geothermal direct uses coexist sustainably and in harmony. It is also a modern tourist destination set against a rich cultural and historical backdrop — the result of a shared vision between Ngāti Whakaue and European settlers to establish Rotorua as a national spa and wellness town in the late 1800s.
This tour will showcase a selection of direct-use sites and some of the most beautiful and well-preserved geothermal features and landscapes of New Zealand. It offers the participants a high-level understanding of the environmental management strategies — and challenges — involved in fulfilling the aspirations of the Rotorua community. These efforts aim to protect the area’s significant cultural and environmental value while supporting low-impact, sustainable use of the geothermal resources for great socio-economic benefits.
Please be prepared to embrace whatever weather Rotorua throws at us. It can be anything, really!
Katherine Luketina (Waikato Regional Council) and Mariana Zuquim (Bay of Plenty Regional Council) (geothermal scientists), and local members of the Rotorua community will be your guides.
Tour will depart Wednesday 12th November, 2pm and return approx 5pm
All fees are in New Zealand dollars and are inclusive of GST (Goods and Services Tax of 15%) where relevant.
